Road Diagnostics and Design

A key component for a cost effective and sustainable rehabilitation and strengthening project is a reliable and precise road problem diagnostics system and a targeted analytical design based on the reasons for the damages and information on their exact location. This system ensures that rehabilitation structures are designed to address the cause of the problem and that design structures are optimized for the transportation needs of the road. Precise location design also saves a substantial amount of money since heavy rehabilitation structures are always more expensive ones. For instance, the calculations done for the City of Tampere street diagnostics have shown that the savings achieved through shortening a thick rehabilitation structure by only 1 meter will return all of the money used in street diagnostics. In addition the lifetime of the new road and street structure will be substantially longer because road diagnostics allow the design engineer to focus on the “weakest link” of the road.
