Another pothole in the same place – how can we highlight problem areas?
Another pothole in the same place – how can we highlight problem areas?
Road Doctor® Maintenance Controller (RDMC) monitors road conditions in real time and can give you a complete, up to the minute view of the condition of the road network and the trend in which it is headed.
When traveling on the road network, why not collect useful data at the same time? With Roadscanners’ RDMC equipment, this is easily done!
Find the Real Problem Areas in the Road Network
Road networks are extensive. Recording observations is laborious, and relying on memory is challenging. In addition to thorough and comprehensive measures, the road network requires many maintenance actions in problematic spots. Potholes often form in low-lying areas where sufficient cross slope cannot be maintained, or on paved roads in the same frost-prone spots each spring. In our experience, problem areas that recur over decades cause inconvenience to road users and increase driving costs.
RDMC measures, among other things, road roughness, rutting, and cross slope during driving. The result is continuous, comparable, and consistent data. The system enables:
- More accurate trend monitoring,
- Faster response to anomalies,
- Maintenance based on actual needs.
Continuous monitoring reveals trends that cannot be detected from individual, one time, measurements. With Road Doctor® Maintenance Controller, measured data is obtained at a higher frequency. Traditional condition measurements might be performed on low-traffic, yet strategically important, road networks only once every three years at worst.
Automation Frees Up Resources
Traditional measurement systems require separate equipment and personnel. The advantage of RDMC is that nothing extra is required. When data is collected automatically during normal driving while doing other tasks, the organization saves time, money, and labor. Measurement should no longer be seen as a separate task, but as part of driving. This enables more frequent measurements and thus more accurate information.
The ways RDMC aids maintenance:
- Planning: Where maintenance actions should be targeted
- Real-time monitoring: See the situation immediately, without delay
- Visualization: An understandable interface shows the service level experienced by the road user, routes, and measurement results clearly
- Historical data: Information is stored automatically, so you can compare periods and areas with each other
This enables the strategic development of the entire road network’s maintenance: where we succeeded, where we can improve, and how best practices can be implemented elsewhere.
Who Is RDMC For?
RDMC is especially suitable for road administrations and other government agencies, contractors, as well as municipalities and cities. Road administrations benefit particularly for reporting and quality assurance. Contractors can verify completed actions and optimize resource use.
How Does Maintenance Controller Differ from Survey Van?
Road Doctor® Survey Van and Road Doctor® Maintenance Controller complement each other but serve different needs.
Survey Van is designed for special studies where very precise and extensive data is collected from the road structure, from the surface down to deep soil layers.
Maintenance Controller, on the other hand, integrates into everyday maintenance. It does not require separate measurement runs but measures automatically as part of daily driving. This way, continuous data is obtained without extra work.
With Survey Van, a single site is studied thoroughly once or, for example, annually. Maintenance Controller, however, works anytime an RDMC equipped vehicle in on the road – it is a tool for continuous monitoring.
Together, these tools provide a comprehensive view of the current state of transport infrastructure and the efficiency of maintenance.
